Barbecues are great, and the smell of cooking steak is the best. But a griddle will take your camp cooking to a new level.
If you are considering adding a griddle to your camping gear, keep reading. We take a look at Blackstone's Griddles.
As part of our research for this article, we bought a 17" Blackstone Tabletop griddle.
Blackstone Griddle Design and Construction
The first thing we noticed was the design. It has a modern look and has quality parts. And it fits into our travel trailer's outdoor cooking cubby.
The second thing we noticed was its construction. The corners have no sharp edges. Burners, knobs, and connections fit tight and were easy to use. And the cooking surface was thick for even heating front to back. And the griddle was light enough to carry.
Blackstone Griddles Are Portable
Some Blackstone griddles are big and heavy. But they do make griddles that deal to take camping.
The 17" model is only 21 pounds with single heat control. This is the griddle we purchased.
The 22" model is 32 pounds with dual heat controls.
Blackstone Griddles Are Easy To Assemble
Assembling the griddle was easy and took only a few minutes. But we had never owned a griddle and had to do a little research on preparing the cooking surface. It's called seasoning.
If you are curious about how to season a Blackstone Griddle. They have a video that goes over it in detail.
One of the things that we like about a griddle is how simple it is to clean. It takes a cup of water, a spatula or wire brush, and a couple of minutes.
Blackstone Griddle Maintenance
The only thing to maintain is the cooking surface. It can rust. So after every use, all that it needs is a thin application of cooking oil to the cooking surface.
Blackstone Griddle Construction?
The griddle cooking surface is cold-rolled carbon steel. Some people think the griddles are cast iron, but they are actually steel.
The front body panels and control knobs on the tabletop models are stainless steel. And the labeling is easy to read.
The body has a black Powdercoat finish with vents.
When it comes to construction, Blackston Griddles are well-made, strong, and durable.
But are they any good for cooking?
What Can You Cook On A Griddle?
Anything cooked in a frying pan will cook on a griddle. And you can also put pans on the griddle to cook soups or boil vegetables.
Beyond grilling meats, breakfast is a snap.
The flat surface has even heat. Hamburgers can cook in one area, hotdogs in another, and corn on the cob in another area. All at the same time.
Can You Use A Blackstone Griddle Indoors?
No. Blackstone's instructions include two warnings about using their griddles indoors.
- “This appliance shall be used only outdoors, and shall not be used in a building, garage, or any other enclosed areas”
- “This appliance is not intended to be installed in or on recreational vehicles.”
Is A Blackstone Griddle Worth It?
Blackstone tabletop griddles are no more expensive than a good quality barbecue. They have quality construction and they're portable.
They are a great addition to your camping cooking tools and well worth buying.
